Use a workspace in Claude Code

Claude Code reaches a workspace through the datamate MCP server. You can run the server through the Altimate Workspaces extension, or on its own from a terminal. To use a workspace without installing anything, see Remote MCP server.

Set up

  1. Set up the Altimate Workspaces extension in VS Code or Cursor, and pick a workspace.
  2. Open the Command Palette (Ctrl+Shift+P / Cmd+Shift+P) and run Altimate Workspaces: Run Altimate Diagnostics.
  3. When it finishes, copy the Server URL from its output. It looks like http://localhost:7700/mcp, though the port can differ.

  4. Add the server to Claude Code:

    claude mcp add --transport http datamate http://localhost:7700/mcp

    Use the exact URL from the diagnostics output. If you've set the extension's altimate.mcpTransport setting to sse, the URL ends in /sse; add it with --transport sse instead.

  5. Check it was added:

    claude mcp list

The server runs inside the extension, so VS Code or Cursor needs to be open while you use it from Claude Code.

Set up

  1. Install Node.js if you don't have it.

  2. Install the datamate MCP server, version 0.7.2 or later:

    npm install -g @altimateai/datamate

  3. In the web app, open the workspace and click Open in → Claude Code. The steps there use this workspace's id.

  4. The first time you use this workspace on this machine, download the configuration template from that page and fill in the values.

  5. Start the server:

    datamate start --datamate <workspace id> --client claude-code --config-file <path to your configuration file>

    With --client claude-code, the server adds itself to Claude Code at user scope. Pass --scope project or --scope local to change that, or --no-auto-configure to skip it. You only need --config-file the first time.

  6. In a Claude Code session, run /mcp. datamate should be listed as connected.
